5. A few words about compatibility

Both of the leading disc formats, Plus and Dash, will play in most newer DVD players and DVD read-only drives. But there are some differences in compatibility between the two formats. And recordable (R) discs are generally a compatible with more DVD players and drives than rewritable (RW) discs because of differences in the types of dye used in the two types of discs.

The most comprehensive compatibility tests conducted have been done by Intellikey Labs, an independent testing laboratory based in Burbank, California. A summary of Intellikey Labs’ findings appear s below.

Note: DVD-RW offers two different recording modes. VM mode is compatible but offers no editing functionality. VR mode can be edited, but is incompatible with most DVD players.

DVD+R/+RW has no different recording modes: Editing functionality is always available, while offering the highest compatibility in the industry.
