MASS VOLUME CHINESE AND KOREAN MANUFACTURERS TO SHOWCASE
DVD+RW CONSUMER RECORDER PRODUCTS AT CES 2003
Leading Mass Volume Consumer Electronics Manufacturers
Embrace DVD+RW Format For Consumer DVD Recorders
LAS VEGAS - Leading mass volume consumer electronics manufacturers
such as, Mico Electric (Hong Kong), Tae Young Telstar and
Daewoo Electronics (Korea) will demonstrate their DVD+R/+RW
recorders at the CES show in Las Vegas (January 2003).
Currently manufacturing VCRs and/or DVD players in high
volume for both their own brands as well as for other leading
brands, these companies will be instrumental in bringing
DVD Recording to the mass consumer and will enable the
DVD Recorder to replace VCR in the near future. The several
companies plan to start production in mid 2003.
"These new DVD+R/+RW consumer recorder products are
a welcome addition to the current DVD+RW Recorders from
Philips, Sony, Thomson/ RCA and Yamaha that are out in
the market already or introduced at CES," said Maureen
Weber, general manager, HP Optical Storage Solutions Business
and spokesperson for the DVD+RW Alliance. "The companies
that brought DVD players to mass consumer markets are now
embracing the DVD+R/+RW format for their new DVD Recorders.
This is clear proof that the DVD+RW format is becoming
the format of choice, not only in the PC arena, but also
for consumer video recording;"
Unlike other DVD standards, the DVD+R/+RW format was designed
from the outset to fulfill the needs of both the consumer
electronics products and PC domains. This gives optimal
ease-of-use and performance in both PC data recording as
well as consumer video recording applications.
"The DVD+R/+RW format has a high compatibility advantage
over all other DVD recordable/rewritable formats," says
Mr. T.J. Yoon from Young Telstar. "Compatibility with
the large installed base of DVD players is what our customers
expect from a DVD recorder, that's why we have opted for
the DVD+R/+RW format. In addition, DVD+R/+RW is the de
facto standard for the PC with the support of industry-leading
personal computing manufacturers companies like Dell, HP
and Microsoft. We see that this is an important factor
for setting the worldwide DVD recording standard also in
the consumer electronics arena."
"The DVD recorder is the local extension to our DVD
player products by simply adding the recording function," says
Kyu-Hwan Chang of Daewoo Electronics. "DVD+R/+RW is
the only format that offers ease of use, with instant use
(no formatting) and instant eject (no finalization), yet
having the powerful advantages of DVD; with same user interface,
direct access and picture quality as good as DVD Video.
Our customers want an easy-to-use DVD video recorder that
works instantaneously, without having to worry about different
recording modes or formats."
"We value the support the DVD+RW Alliance can provide
to help us to get our products to market," says Mrs.
Venus Ko of Mico Electric. "This goes beyond helping
us with key components and reference designs. The DVD+RW
Compatibility Group for Recorders (DCCG-RG) helps manufacturers
to ensure compatibility between DVD+R/+RW media and recorders.
The DCCG-Playback Group also helps improving compatibility
of DVD+R/+RW discs on DVD players."
