SONY INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST DUAL RW COMPATIBLE HOME DVD RECORDER

New Recorder Provides Format Flexibility and Advanced Video Performance

LAS VEGAS (CES, Booth #N109), Jan. 8, 2003 - Fueling innovation in an emerging category, Sony Electronics today unveiled the industry's first dual compatible -RW/+ RW DVD home recorder, enabling high quality DVD recording and unsurpassed picture performance from a variety of original sources.
Compatible with popular DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW discs, the RDR-GX7 DVD recorder gives users a wider selection of recording and viewing choices. The new model also incorporates several picture improvement technologies to create enhanced DVD recordings, especially effective when transferring content from video sources such as VHS or 8mm camcorders.
The new recorder is equipped with convenience features such as i.LINK® (IEEE-1394) digital interface as well as an intuitive, easy-to-use graphical user interface that allows for simple, yet powerful interoperability with compatible camcorders. It also offers easy recording and editing from broadcast programs via off-air antenna, cable, or satellite receivers.
" The new recorder marries format compatibility and ease-of-use, placing it at the forefront of this new product category," said Joseph Stinziano, director of DVD marketing for Sony Electronics' Home Entertainment Products Division. "Just imagine; thanks to the recorder's user-friendly and intelligent features, you can share your baby's first steps with family and friends in impressive DVD picture quality at the touch of a button."

Media Format Flexibility
According to Stinziano, the new recorder helps consumers take the guesswork out of choosing the right DVD disc format when recording. By offering DVD-R/-RW and DVD+RW recording capabilities, it allows reproduction of brilliant images from a variety of video sources. The new model is also compatible with DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW discs for playback. Its format flexibility gives DVD enthusiasts the option to watch nearly any DVD recording in their collection.
Users can take advantage of the large capacity of the DVD format, as the new model can record up to 6 hours in various recording modes, while maintaining impressive picture and sound quality. The RDR-GX7 is an ideal product for consumers seeking a flexible storage and archiving solution.
Unlike tape-based media, another benefit of recording in the DVD format is its convenient random access capability, enabling seamless audio and video content retrieval without the need for cueing or rewinding. Use the new recorder's menu function to confirm recorded content and quickly access and play any desired sequence.

Seamless Camcorder Interoperability
The RDR-GX7 provides effortless integration with compatible camcorders through its front panel i.LINK (DV) connection for easy tape to disc content transfer. In addition to allowing simple camcorder hook-up, the i.LINK (DV) interface enables users to control the connected camcorder via the supplied Remote Commander® remote control. Expediting the content transfer process, the users can copy the entire contents of their DV or D8 tape by selecting the unique and convenient one-touch dubbing feature.
In addition, the new model offers advanced editing features from camcorder tape content. The two basic options include either first downloading the entire contents onto a DVD disc and then editing the content in a non-linear fashion right on the disc, or more traditional linear editing directly from the tape.

Brilliant Video Reproduction and Performance
The new recorder features Time Based Corrector, Pre-Field Noise Reduction and Pre-video Equalizer technologies that rebalance and equalize video content before it is recorded onto a DVD, improving the original source content even before the encoding process begins. This impressive process is especially beneficial when recording from lower resolution video sources such as VHS tapes and older camcorder media formats.
During the encoding process, video content is analyzed for last minute corrections to ensure precise output and high quality video reproduction. Features such as variable bit-rate MPEG encoding ensure maximum efficiency and recording time for all types of DVD media.
In the output phase, the RDR-GX7's Motion Adaptive Field Noise Reduction, Block Noise Reduction and Video Equalizer technologies combine to produce a richly textured visual rendition while minimizing picture interference caused by background artifacts or distortion. The new recorder also incorporates proprietary DVD playback technology called Precision Cinema Progressive™, which incorporates Pixel-by-Pixel I/P Conversion technology to augment and balance DVD-video elements. Additionally, a 12bit/108MHz Video D/A Converter ensures exceptional picture quality for an unforgettable viewing experience.

The RDR-GX7 DVD dual RW recorder will be available in June for about $800
